Most tour companies are based in Kathmandu or Pokhara. We tend to take the path less traveled, so our base of operations is in the town of Butwal. Listed as the “Best City in Nepal” for five straight years, it is at a natural crossroads. To the north are the Himalayan Mountains. To the south is the fertile lowlands of the Terai and attractions like Bardia National Park and the UNESCO World Heritage site at Lumbini. It is the entry point for western Nepal, and for centuries has been the regional capital for trade and commerce.
We chose Butwal for our base of operations for those and many more. With its close proximity to a domestic airport and easy access to the country’s untraveled regions, it is perfectly situated as a launch point for adventure. Four our motorcycle guests, it allows us to move beyond to traffic and congestion of the capital city of Kathmandu. We can start our tours in Butwal and be carving turns on mountain roads in a matter of minutes.
Another reason to begin your adventure in Butwal is to experience a Nepal few others even know exists. The many cultures of Nepal weave an intricate fabric with several of them represented in Butwal
From a logistical standpoint, it offers good hotels, nice restaurants, and convenient banking services. It also sits at the nexus of the Mahendra and Siddhartha highways. Within a matter of minutes our guests can be at the birthplace of Lord Buddha, or visiting the former palace of the Magar Kingdom in the mountains to the north. Not every tour company sees the potential of the city as an adventure destination, but that’s why Altitude Riders is not like every other tour company.
